Spotted Seatrout
One of the most popular inshore saltwater gamefish in the southern United States, it occurs from New York to Florida and throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Also called "Speckled Trout" or simply "speck", the fish is widely caught on artificial lures as well as live bait. In Florida, prior to the net ban, Speckled Trout were the fourth most valuable commercial fish, ranking behind the menhaden, mullet, and red snapper. Presently with the net ban in force, the commercial catch has been greatly reduced. It is now the most popular of the bay fishes for the sport fishermen. Live shrimp is the most widely used bait, but good catches are often made on small live fishes or small crabs. Plugs, both topwater and sinking types, as well as jigs, spoons, streamer flies, and popping bugs, are all considered successful lures. Since trout are often caught in very shallow water, wade fishing can be highly productive.
The objectives of the Pensacola Speckled Trout Club are to promote fellowship among the areas inshore anglers; to stimulate public interest in speckled trout fishing and other types of sport fishing for inshore saltwater species; to promote conservation and wise use of the inshore fishery to the best advantage of all user groups. We believe that Speckled Trout fishing isn't just fishing for trout. We believe that it is fishing for sport - where the true enjoyment lies in the challenge, the lore and the wits - not necessarily to fill the fish cooler. We believe that it is the feeling of satisfaction that comes from one's limiting his kill - instead of killing his limit. We believe that it is in communing with nature where the chief reward is a refreshed body and a contented soul - where a man is permitted to use. (not abuse) - to enjoy (not destroy) - our estuarine fishery. We believe that it is subscribing to the proposition that "what is good for the Speckled Trout is good for the fisherman" and that managing trout for themselves, rather than for the fisherman, is fundamental to the solution of our Speckled Trout problems. And finally that we believe that it is appreciating our fishery
resource, respecting fellow anglers, and giving serious thought to tomorrow.
The Pensacola Speckled Trout Club is open to anyone who enjoys fishing or who desires to learn how to fish. The club sponsors nine tournaments per year. An entry fee of $5.00 is collected at each tournament and usually there will be one tournament each month starting in March and ending in November. Tournaments are scheduled from safe daylight to twelve noon on a Saturday with a fish cookout following the weigh-in. We host a "family style" fish fry during the spring and a steak cookout in the fall. A banquet starts the season off with the installation of the newly elected club officials. Eleven meetings held at 7:00 PM in the Mira Flores clubhouse located at the corner of 17th avenue and Belmont in Pensacola, Florida. Meetings are scheduled for the third Tuesday of the month, with no meeting being held in December. Dues are $20.00 a year for adults (16 and above) and $10.00 a year for juniors.
